Get Fit by Eating Well

Posted on: 16, Nov

Staying fit and losing some pounds can be a daunting task for men. Finding the right diet can be a tentative balance. However, men may be surprised to hear that they can still maintain a good weight without giving up their favorite foods. Here are a set of no-nonsense tips that will have guys looking good and feeling great (without the hunger pains):

1. Try eating several small meals throughout the day. This controls appetite and keeps your metabolism going.

2. Don’t starve and then binge. Skipping meals could end up promoting more fat storage and lowering your metabolism due to fluctuating insulin and blood sugar levels.

3. Set regular mealtimes and stick with them. Once your body comes to expect a meal at the same time everyday, it’s easier to avoid sudden cravings and snack attacks.

4. When hunger strikes, make sure you’ve got some healthy snack options available to you (this is a great way to get in your 5-9 servings a day of fruits and vegetables).

5. Protein is more filling than carbohydrates and usually has fewer calories, so be sure to include fish, lean beef and pork, white-meat poultry, eggs, nuts and beans in your diet.

6. Reduce serving sizes and eat a wider variety of food. Don’t deny yourself your favorite foods…just consume them in moderation.

7. Avoid drinks that contain calories and stick to water instead. Many men don’t realize that beverages are often loaded with empty calories and don’t accommodate for them with their meals.

8. One simple way to avoid packing on calories is to use more spices in your food and less condiments like mayonnaise, butter and sour cream.

9. Eat slowly so your body gets a chance to register the food and you won’t end up eating more than you should. Eat until you feel satisfied; not stuffed.

Picture the scene - you are already losing weight or just about to start a diet and you have a big anniversary or other special occasion coming along. You’ve been invited out to a lovely restaurant that you’ve wanted to go to for so long but what about the diet? Your doctor has already advised you against eating restaurant food as it can result in weight gain. You simply don’t know what to do, right? Well, I will tell you how to enjoy restaurant foods while at the same time making sure that you don’t get any fatter!

As a general rule of thumb: if a certain food tastes too good, it means it has been richly fried, and as such, not good for your health. Those rich creamy sauces that you love contain a lot of cream and butter - not at all healthy! The best foods for quick weight loss, surprisingly enough, are raw or steamed vegetables and fruits.

1. Avoid the buffets:

A lot of the foods you see at buffets are high in calories. That’s because these foods are cooked in bulk with a large amount of oil. If you really want to eat from buffets, make sure you steer clear of these fatty foods and choose the salads and other healthier alternatives instead! That way, you won’t accumulate an excessive amount of fat in your body!

2. Eat at vegetarian restaurants:

If you really want to be on the safe side and avoid some of the temptations then visit restaurants which offer only vegetarian meals. This is in no way saying that non-veg meals are bad. With non-veg restaurants, you have to take extra care to make sure that you are not eating high-calorie or high-fat foods. However, nowadays many restaurants offer vegetarian meals so that would be a healthier option.

3. Control your portions:

Check the amount of food you are going to eat before you take that bite! If you think that the food provided to you exceed the portion control limit you are allowed, eat according to your portion limit and then carry the leftovers back home to be eaten on the next day. Ask for a box from the restaurant to help you carry the leftovers.

4. Use caution when choosing a salad dressing:

Salads are good for quick weight loss. That’s because salads are nothing but raw vegetables in chopped form. Raw vegetables, as you might be aware, help you burn fat by boosting your metabolic rate. However, the salad dressing that is provided in most restaurants is rich in calories. So whenever you ask for salads, make sure to instruct them to remove the salad dressing or request a low-fat salad dressing. Alternatively, sprinkle a small amount of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar, if they supply it, to add a bit of zing to the meal.

As long as you use your discretion and are sensible about what you eat, there is nothing wrong with eating at a restaurant once in while and still be able to lose weight. So go ahead and appease your tastebuds! If you simply can’t resist one of the fattening options then simply cut back on your calorie intake the following day and do more exercise!

When we talk about exercise to loose weight most people think of running, aerobics and sometimes kickboxing, usually it is an exercise that will get you heart rate up for about 35-45 minutes. It’s true, that one hour of aerobic exercise probably burns more calories than one hour of weight training. From the Nutritional Pyramid to eat all of your vegetables, your doctor, school health classes and your mother have stressed healthy eating habits. The concept of eating healthy foods has been promoted ever since we learned that what we eat has a direct effect on our health.

Healthy eating is a habit of selecting the quantity and quality of foods that will either improve or maintain a good level of health. Usually, this means following the guidelines set by those who know the best, including scientific researchers, doctors, and nutritionists.

Health professionals set nutritional recommendations based on the ingredients and contents of food items. How fast and efficiently the body breaks down a food item and uses it for energy influences the way certain eating habits are viewed. For example, eating foods filled with sugar will not do much for maintaining a healthy body. The empty calories that sweets have actually aid in weight gain and increased glucose levels, which affect a variety of health concerns, such as diabetes.

The concept of healthy eating has changed over the years. This can be seen through the shift in the commonly used Nutritional Pyramid. In the past, the Pyramid gave daily recommendations on how many servings from each food group was needed to achieve healthy eating habits. Everyone was expected to follow the same recommendations. Today, these guidelines are now based on the differences that individuals have. The new serving suggestions now take into account factors such as weight, height, level of physical activity, age and gender.

By entering your information on the MyPyramid.gov website, you will receive a personalized plan suggesting the best selections from each food group that will keep you healthy. You will also receive advice on how to couple healthy eating habits with an acceptable amount of physical activity. The goal is to achieve an overall increase in health through a better balance of nutrition, calories and exercise.

Living a healthy life through the foods we eat means taking into account all of the factors that come with various eating habits. This includes the total amount of calorie consumption throughout the day. Healthy eating deals with the balance of important nutrients, such as carbohydrates, proteins and fats. For example, there are some carbohydrates considered healthier than others. Knowing how to separate good carbs from bad carbs contributes to nourishing eating habits that last a lifetime.

To improve your health, one should consume more nutritious foods, such as brown rice and green vegetables, while at the same time, decreasing the consumption of candy bars, fried foods and soda. Foods rich in vitamins contribute to healthy eating practices. You should also know that the way you prepare your food also has an influence on your health. For example, fruits and vegetables retain more vitamins and nutrients when eaten raw, rather than boiled, steamed or cooked in the microwave. Avoiding foods with a high concentration of dyes, artificial sweeteners and preservatives is also helpful.

For more information, there are numerous resources that offer a list of healthy foods and advice for healthy eating practices. These references may be found on the Internet, in the local bookstore, at the library and throughout your doctors office. Learning how to eat right will not only boost your overall health, but also lead to securing a longer, more productive life.
