its to do with the types of oils in the foods, nuts, fatty fish and avocado contain "good fats" which are omega 3 fatty acids. rather than saturated fat found in animal fats. omega 3 fats are good for various functions in the body, where as saturated fats are not.
there are still the same amount of calories in each gram of fat (and many people find peanut butter tasty, hence why its a good weight gainer, because you can eat lots of it and get lots of calories) but even those losing weight are required to take in fat each day, and these "good fats" are a better use of those fat calories, than saturated fats.
References :
Dear Confused,
I don't think there is a right or wrong answer for that, but from personal experience I can give you some tips for weight lost if that's what you want. Around Nov. of 2006 I stopped frying all foods at home, which we did'nt do much, but we don't at all now. We only bake, grill, or broil our foods. I kinda slowed down on the sweets around the house, only keeping fresh fruit around to snack on instead of candy, and cakes, the kids will eventually go to the fruit to fill in for candy. We're more active now,so since i've did these little changes, i've lost a total of 33 lbs, since Nov. I tell people it's not a diet it's a lifestyle change for me !
References :
There is a lot of nutrition misinformation out there. The one and only way to lose weight is by burning more calories than you take in. A diet consisting of only Snickers bars will allow you to lose weight if you're active enough to burn off more calories than you ate.

As far as peanut butter (or any nut or nut butter), avocados, oilive oil and fattty fish goes, the fat that is present in those are monounsaturated fatty acids, which lower the "bad" cholesterol while raising the "good." You can enjoy all of those in your diet if you're willing to burn off the calories.

Hope that cleared things up a bit for you.
References :
Some amount of essential fats are good. However, once the body gets its requirement, the remainder quickly become empty calories and will cause weight gain.

Diet foods=weight gain foods?
Is anyone else confused by the fact that some of the same foods are recommended for gaining and losing weight? Like peanut butter for example. All weight gain web sites say EAT PEANUT BUTTER, but diet sites also say that peanut butter helps you lose weight. It's so confusing. This is also true for other foods like avocados, olive oil, fatty fish, etc., etc. Does anyone understand this?
